Effortless Soap Cutting

When we first started soap making, we often found that when we came to cut the soap, inevitably it was a bit hit and miss.  Just using a knife meant that there was room for weird shapes and crooked bars.

Kim was sometimes disappointed that we went to all the effort of making a fantastic looking bar of soap and then to muck up the cutting.

Well, being a can-do sort of guy, I designed and created a soap cutting box for her to use.

Kim wanted to be able to cut three sizes with this box, and she wanted it to be slightly larger than our wooden soap mould so it could be used to cut soap logs made with the mould we stock.

So I designed it with a 25mm width section at the font, and a second section of 30mm in width for a chunkier bar of soap that some of our customers prefer.

The front section had a small stop block to ensure that every cut was the same width.  To use the second section, we simply placed a straight soap cutter in the first slot to act as the stop and cut via the second slot.  Using the first slot we were able to make 10 bars from a standard log, and 9 bars using the second chunkier slot.

Additionally, if she wanted to make a horizontal cut due to the design, Kim could cut the log into six even bars of 60mm long using the second slot and the front stop, then stand each chunk upright and cut it in half to show off her unique design.

I made both cuts wide enough for our straight and wavy soap cutters to fit into.

Kim liked it so much that she put me into production to make a few more for our soap customers!

So there you have it.  A simple need turned into a really useful piece of soap making equipment.
