Soap Making Workshop – August 2013

We held a soap making workshop at the Melton South Community Centre on the 18th of August.  This was the fifth workshop of this type that we have taught and we find that they are usually well attended.

This session was no exception.  We had a full house of students, who made their very own 1 kg block of soap during the workshop, and they walked away with big smiles and lots of ideas.

A couple of days before each session we make a 1 kg (2.2 lbs) block of soap with multiple colours and patterns.  You can see yours truly heating the oils on our stove top at home before adding the lye.

We make this soap block so that when the students have all finished pouring their soap into moulds during the session, Kim then demonstrates what they have to do in 48 hours time, when the soap is ready for the next stage of the process.

Soap Making WorkshopShe takes the soap out of the mould, and then cuts it into bars to show them how to divide up the solid block, and how to dry the soap for the four weeks before it is ready to use.

We find that this really helps our students understand the entire process and can go home feeling confident that they will be successful when they cut and dry it themselves.

We had a great day, and made lots of new friends.  Looking forward to Feta and Mozzarella this weekend!
